Karel Koplimets

(Estonia, °1986)


Karel Koplimets is an installation artist based in Ghent, Belgium. He has an MA degree in Photography (Estonian Academy of Arts, 2013) and he is currently part of the postgraduate programme at HISK (Higher Institute for Fine Arts, Belgium). He is a member of the artist collective Visible Solutions LLC (together with Sigrid Viir and Taaniel Raudsepp). He has received the Estonian Artist Laureate Salary (2020) and he was nominated for the main art prize in Estonia (Köler Prize, 2013). Koplimets has participated in various exhibitions in Estonia and abroad. Recent exhibition projects include: Flat Circle, (Draakon Gallery, Estonia, 2019), The Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art (Riga, Latvia, 2018) and There and Back Again (Kiasma, Finland, 2018). His works are included in various collections in Europe, e.g., Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Musée de l'Elysée, and Art Museum of Estonia.

Koplimets uses mainly camera based mediums to create room installations. In his latest projects he has been working with the shifts in economics and the changes it causes in people's lives. He is interested in subjects such as gentrification, commuting, cross-border working and shopping. In his previous practice, he has dealt with topics such as crimes, mechanisms of fears, conspiracy theories and paranoias.
